Nigeria’s chapter of global Chevening alumni body elects new executives
MTN’s Osahenye replaces Channels TV’s John Momoh as president
THE NIGERIAN CHAPTER OF THE world renowned body of British Chevening scholars, the Chevening Alumni Association of Nigeria, at a highly attended virtual extraordinary general meeting (EGM) penultimate Saturday, elected its new executives to pilot its affairs for next two years.
Chevening scholarship is the UK Government scholarships and fellowships that enable future leaders to study in the UK, whilst joining a global community of professionals who are creating positive change around the globe.
At the end of the election the following members were elected to the lead the CAAN for two years.
Kester Osahenye, a senior manager with MTN Nigeria, writer, public speaker and ICT4D promoter, was elected as president. He was the immediate past general secretary of the association, and replaced John Momoh, founder and executive chairman of Channels Television.
Others elected are Adetoun Mustapha as vice president; Oluwafemi Adedipe, general secretary; Suleiman Mshelia emerged as assistant general secretary; Ajibola Anjorin was elected as Chief Whip,; Nkiru Okobi as financial secretary; Marilyn Eze, a seasoned lawyer, became the legal adviser of the association.
Ijeoma Onyeator of Channels Television is the new Publicity Secretary of the association.
In September 2019, at their annual general meeting, the association also elected the following into its
Board of Trustees.
John Momoh, president of Channels Television, as chairman of the BoT; Amina Oyagbola, a legal adviser and management consultant, as member; Adamu Garba (member);
Markie Snomie Idowu (member); Florence Iheme (member).
Following the recent election, the new president and general secretary become members of the board or trustees as stipulated in the association’s constitution.
In his acceptance speech the new president, Kester Osahenye, promised to work with the executive committee and the Board of Trustees to rejig the CAAN mentoring programme that will help returnee Cheveners to find their feet in the corporate world.
He also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to grow educational programmes in Nigeria, through its educational workstreams, adding that CAAN will embark on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics STEM boot camps for young Nigerians, which will be sponsored by CAAN and its global alliances.

Since 1983, over 50,000 professionals have studied in the UK through Chevening. In Nigeria more than 1,400 Nigerians have benefited from Chevening scholarships and fellowships, among them are prominent Nigerians such as John Momoh of Channels TV; Simon Kolawole, journalist, columnist and the pubiisher of The Cable News; Okey Nwuke, deputy managing director of Coscharis Group; Amina Oyagbola seasoned lawyer and the founder of WISCAR; Phillip Isakpa, the publisher of Business A.M.; Kenneth Amaeshi, professor at the University of Edinburgh; and Herbert Wigwe, Group CEO of Access Bank, among several others.
