Q1 Chromebook’s shipment skyrockets 276% y/y to 12m units
HP, Lenovo accounts for 60% total sales
With millions of users worldwide, Chromebooks have become a mainstream computing product. Over the last year, their popularity among traditional consumers has reached new heights with the education sector maintaining the biggest share of global Chromebook shipments. According to data by StockApps, Global Chromebook shipments soared by 276 percent year-on-year to hit 12 million units in the first quarter of 2021.
As distant learning became the new normal amid the COVID-19 lockdowns, global demand for Chromebooks rose to a record high last year. As revealed by Statista and Canalys data, while the first quarter of 2020 saw around 3.2 million Chromebooks sold worldwide, in the next six months, global Chromebook shipments tripled and hit 10 million units.
With more than 11 million units sold between September and December alone, the growing demand for Chromebooks continued throughout 2020. According to statistics, the total number of shipments jumped to 29.6 million in 2020, a massive 75 per cent increase in a year.
In Q1 2021, with almost 12 million Chromebooks sold worldwide, the quarterly sales figures hit an all-time high as HP and Lenovo dominated the Chromebook market, with 7.5 million sold units or 60 percent of total shipments.
According to Statistics, Acer shipped 1.43 million Chromebooks, which represents 178 percent more than in Q1 2020 and Dell doubled its sales to 1 million sold units during the study period while Samsung witnessed the most significant growth in the first months of 2021, with the number of shipped Chromebooks soaring by 2233 percent year-on-year to 1.2 million units in Q1 2021.
While all Chromebook vendors posted record first-quarter shipment numbers, HP topped the market again with an annual growth of 633 percent, propelling it past the 4-million-unit mark. The US tech giant also doubled its market share in the last year as it accounted for 36.4 percent of total Chromebook sales in Q1 2021.
Between January and March, Lenovo took second place with a 25 percent market share compared to 23.8 percent in Q1 2019. Acer and Dell followed with a 16.1 percent and 15.7 percent market share, respectively.
