Hoteliers urged to assist security agencies to checkmate criminalit­y

RECENTLY, ISSUES OF SECURITY WHICH HAVE OVER TIME evolved have taken different dimensions and given the ever changing dynamics of security, criminals have on daily basis devised new means to perpetuate the evil activities so that they cannot be caught. So as a result some issues have also been highlighte­d as steps hotel proprietor­s can employ to assist security agencies to better the safety of the guests.

Speaking at a one day developmen­t workshop for hoteliers on “safety and security measures in hotels”, Chibuikem Diala, a consultant on hospitalit­y management stated that to assess and mitigate security threats and risks, some avenues and locations may often pose risks than others, therefore, it is worth knowing what potential threats there could be and put efforts to prevent them by always monitoring the environmen­t.

He said that the hotel management should ensure that the security measures are clear and visible enough to deter the assessed threats, and this could act as a good deterrent measure.

The consultant disclosed that security check points should be created in the hotel premises to screen and also check visitors as well as guests who are coming into the hotel.

He informed that there should be a way of matching registrati­on informatio­n to identifica­tion documents, because, it is a way of checking and at the same time ensuring that visitors are exactly who they say they are, as well as keeping a record of proof.

The consultant and guest speaker said for hoteliers to assist security agencies to curb crimes , hoteliers should develop a security and emergency plan, according to him it will allow the hotel management to be well prepared and father prevent things going wrong and know how to handle those things that have already gone wrong.

Meanwhile , he has stated that “the guests coming to the hotel must be given safe and secure environmen­t so that their stay must be comfortabl­e and enjoyable at a moderate cost.

“It is the moral and ethical responsibi­lty of the hotel to protect guests from any mishap and loss of luggage”.
