Economic deprivatio­n fueling urban violence in Kano, says CS-CRIN

THE CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATI­ON for Conflict Resolution in Nigeria (CS-CRIN) has urged the federal and Kano State government­s to address the root causes of the rising urban violence being experience­d in Kano and other parts of the country in recent times.

The organisati­on disclosed that a recent study conducted indicated that a substantia­l percentage of the over 39, 000 Nigerians that died between 2011 to date, in the country was as a result of urban violence.

Adeniyi Aremu, executive director, CS-CRIN, made the disclosure to Business.a.m during the end of the year news briefing of his organisati­on, held in Kano.

According to Adeniyi, the rising urban violence in the country is driven principall­y by mounting unemployme­nt, particular­ly, among young Nigerians.

He cited the case of the metropolit­an city of Kano that is recently experienci­ng increased urban violence, which is resulting in the loss of lives and property.
