20 per­sons die, N417m prop­erty de­stroyed in Gombe

About 20 peo­ple lost their lives and prop­erty worth over N417 mil­lion were re­port­edly de­stroyed in var­i­ous fire dis­as­ters in Gombe be­tween Jan­uary and De­cem­ber 2018. Wam­bai Haruna, a deputy di­rec­tor, Gombe Fire Ser­vice dis­closed this at the week­end, say­ing, how­ever, that the ser­vice saved 2,053 lives and N4.4 bil­lion prop­erty while 168 peo­ple sus­tained var­i­ous de­grees of in­juries in the pe­riod un­der re­view.

Haruna said there was the need for the pub­lic to co­op­er­ate with per­son­nel of the ser­vice by alert­ing them early enough when­ever there was a fire out­break.

He also urged par­ents to cau­tion their wards on the han­dling of in­flammable items and to switch off all elec­tri­cal ap­pli­ances be­fore go­ing to bed, to avoid fire out­break.

Haruna fur­ther ap­pealed to the state gov­ern­ment to pro­vide the ser­vice with more equip­ment to en­hance dis­as­ter man­age­ment.
