Life lessons from Iniobong Umoren’s killing

- With Rev. Yomi Kasali

Istill do not understand how we got to this place, how a 20-yearold young man could conceive such dastardly act and carry the same out, how he could lure a young lady ( Umoren) through reverse psychology by tempting her with a job and then demanding sex from her. I still do not understand the fact that she agreed to be raped but only with condoms (that’s what he said, and he could be lying). I do not get how he could just waste her promising life by killing her, and the moving on. I’m saddened by the story of the murder of Umoren in the cold hands of Uduak Akpan in Akwa Ibom a few days ago.

This calls for sober reflection about our priorities today and it has nothing to do with Poverty, Politics, or even Religion, it’s a social malady. We need to take a closer look at the mirror, and we shall all see reflections of ourselves in that terrible animal (Uduak Akpan) that killed the vulnerable and naive lady who would throw reason out of the window in search for a job. Let’s talk to ourselves and be real and acknowledge that we did this to ourselves.

The Bible says, ‘ But they that will (by any means necessary) be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lists, which drown men in the destruction and perdition’ (1 Tim. 6 v 9). This verse is what prosperity preachers will never read to you in church today, they will never tell their members that the ‘ Love of Money is indeed the root of all evil’ yet we as a people have become insane in the way we worship money and look for the same without caution.

Let me inspire my readers today from the Life of the lovely lady who lost her precious life in the hands of that that fellow, I want us all to pick life lessons from the sad event and become wiser in our conduct.

4 Lessons from umoren’s life Do not trust everything on social media:

Like many great inventions and innovations, the enemy can use them for terrible purposes. There is nothing wrong with the concept of social media but in the hands of terrible people, it can become a hurtful tool to torture and wreak havoc. So many people trust everything they read on social media, but I appeal to you today not to trust everything you come across on these platforms…verify before acting.

Tell people where you are going:

This is the saving grace in this lady’s life, she had left so many traces of her last few steps that it became easy for people to locate the place of her last visit or stop. There are many who live coded lives and don’t tell people where they go to, they end up being missing and killed unfortunately. Leave a trace behind.

Do not look for money at all cost:

The best gift you can give yourself is a Contented heart, live a life of contentment and nurture the virtue in your life. Do not let people place you under pressure to look for money at all costs, it usually does not end well. There are people who do crazy things for money and money related things. The Bible says, Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim. 6 v 6)

Do not walk alone: Try never to go to places you’ve never been to alone, go with people always. Do not be alone in a room with someone you are meeting for the first time, they may spike your drink and do terrible things to the person. This is what our society has become today.

I really feel sad and bad that a nation and people that worship money the way we do will never make it to greatness. It’s Righteousness that exalts a nation and people not Wealth.
