In its drive to boost the human capital base of Nigeria’s accounting and finance sector, Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) has inducted 1,264 new registered and associate chartered accountants.

In admitting the new members, ICAN says it remains uncompromising in ensuring that students’ knowledge is tested in a way that would not just prepare them for today’s market but guarantee that the inductees are equipped with skills that would make them futureready.

Onome Joy Adewuyi, president of ICAN speaking at the 67th induction of the new members in Lagos, said the inductees had successfully gone through the qualifying processes characterising the institute’s examinations.

Adewuyi said globally, professionals are faced with a situation that creates both threats and opportunities and organisations and professionals must adjust to emerging developments and opportunities.

According to her, with this singular occasion, the inductees become part of over three million accountants across the world under the umbrella of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

Isma’ila Muhammadu Zakari, former president of ICAN who was the guest speaker at the event, charged the new members to ensure they create their own future, by focusing on technological and digital transformation as this have powerful implications for the future of chartered accountants and the accountancy profession.

Zakari while delivering his paper titled “Five important things to think about - as you start your professional accounting career” said the COVID- 19 pandemic has accelerated the timeline and heightened the urgency of embracing digitalisation to support sustainable organisations and economies.
