Use funds for new gov’s lodge to pay workers’ salaries, PDP to Akeredolu

- JACOB AKINTUNDE, Akure

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to discontinue with his administration’s plan to build another Governor’s Lodge with alleged two billion naira amid irregular payment of workers’ salaries.

The state PDP chairman, Fatai Adams, who made the call on Thursday while addressing journalists in Akure, described the proposed governor’s lodge as “wasteful”.

Adams also expressed concerns over the mass resignation of medical doctors from the state public service as a result of the inability of the state government to pay their salaries and hazard allowances as at when due.

Recall that Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had on Monday said no fewer than 105 medical doctors in different fields of medicine and surgery have resigned in the state.

The association in a press statement, signed by the NMA state chairman, Stella Adegbehingbe, and secretary, Olorunfemi Owa, blamed the trend on irregular and percentage payment of salaries by the state government.

According to the NMA in the state, the situation is so unfortunate that medical doctors in this cadre have left the employment of the State Hospitals Management Board without replacement over the last few months.

But, Adams said, “I’m sure you will all recall that Ondo State was the destination for medical tourism in the Southwest because of the first- class service delivery found here under the PDP administration.

“This is very pathetic, our people are dying unattended to, this portends grave danger especially in a period when all manners of epidemic rear their ugly heads.”
