N75,000 bursary payment to education students commences in 2022 – FG
The federal government on Monday said the payment of bursary to students studying education courses in public tertiary institutions of learning will begin this year.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in October last year promised N75,000 as stipend per semester for education students in public universities across the country; and N50,000 for Nigeria Certificate in education (NCE) students.
Adamu Adamu, minister of education speaking at a briefing in Abuja ahead of the 2022 World Teachers Day, said government was not able to pay the bursary due to the lingering strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The minister, who was represented Andrew Adejo, the permanent secretary, said, “Due to the current strike, we have not been able to get the data of all the students, we only have 7 percent of the required data of students in universities. The provision of bursary to the students will commence this year.”
According to him, the theme of the 2022 WTD which is “The Transformation of education Begins with Teachers” strongly stresses the importance of empowering teachers for the effective transformation of education to ensure quality teaching and learning as well as galvanise technological advancements to meet the ever changing needs for national growth and development.
The minister also informed that the national implementation of the new National Teaching Policy has commenced. This, according to him, is a holistic package that will ultimately address the career path, remuneration, professional teaching standards, qualification, deployment and management of teachers.
