FG to commence labour force, living standard survey

- By Cynthia Egboboh, Abuja

The Federal Government has reinstated its commitment to addressing the need of vulnerable citizens across the country, as it disclosed plans to commence the 2022/2023 national Labour Force survey (nlfs) and national Living standard survey (nlss).

speaking during a sensitisation event on the survey in abuja, Clem agba, minister of state for budget and national planning, stated that the surveys were critical and would be a value addition to the existing data available to the government for policy making across all relevant spheres at the national and sub-national levels.

according to him, the production of data by the government is to enable the people to have a realistic view of the economy, and for the government to apply necessary intervention to improve the economy.

“We want to ensure that we target the right areas of the economy so that we can stand a better chance of achieving the objective of the government in addressing the welfare of the people.

“it is unfortunate that circumstances, including COVID-19, climate change and flooding, among others, have eroded the works of this administration.

“The government has rigorously addressed social protection with emphasis on increasing commitment to the vulnerable people. The government has also reviewed the national protection policy in all states of the federation.

“nigeria is progressing when you compare some of the statistics of nbs with other countries,” he said.

also speaking, the statistician-general of the federation, adeyemi adeniran, said the strategic surveys were designed to collect and analyse labour market statistics for the country, including the generally understood and widely anticipated headline unemployment and underemployment rates.

“While the unemployment and underemployment rates are very important figures that indicate the number of persons economically engaged, the nlfs contains a lot more equally interesting and important information that offers useful insight into the health of the labour market in nigeria.
