Qatar 2022: Senegal gift Africa first World Cup win, as Tunisia chances dim

- By John Salau

African champion, Senegal gifted Africa the first win at the ongoing Qatar 2022 fifa World cup winning 3-1 against host nation, Qatar at the Al-thumama stadium as Tunisia another Africa representative saw its chances of progressing from the group stage dim after losing 0-1 to Australia.

Thus, host nation Qatar became the first team to be knocked out of the World cup after a humbling defeat at the hands of Senegal after Ecuador’s draw with the netherlands on match day two.

Senegal were far from impressive but still had too much for their hapless opponents who have made a strong case for the title of worst home nation of all time.

however, Senegal must take the game to the

Ecuadorians on match day three to progress from the group. As it stands after two rounds of matches netherland and Ecuador top group A with four points each with Senegal on three points.

A draw against Ecuador will see Senegal knocked out of the World cup with four points, but could qualify as one of the best losers after all group matches are played.

Aliou cissé changed his formation for match day two after the Teranga Lions’ opening defeat by the netherlands to a more assertive 4-4-2 with both strikers getting on the scoresheet.

The Senegalese head coach said the win against Qatar gave meaning to everything the team have been doing, and will have to savour the result hoping to get a favourable result in their next game.

“When you want to score goals maybe you need to increase the number of forwards. This is not the end of the road; our objective is to get out of the group stages and we know what needs to be done,” cissé said in his post match analysis.

Tunisia on the other hand failed to find the back of the net against Australia after controling possession of the game at 58 to 42 percent with 14 shots against Australia’s 9 shots.

Australia however proved a more clinical side after converting one of its two shots on target against Tunisia’s four as Mitchell Duke gave Australians the crucial win.

Australia forward Mitchell Duke dedicated his match-winning goal against Tunisia to his son and said it is “a moment i will hold very dear for the rest of my life”.

Duke took advantage of a positive start by Australia when he superbly flicked craig Goodwin’s cross into the far corner to put them 1-0 up after 23 minutes.

Tunisia, who take on france in their final match, are all but out, though manager Jalel Kadri remains optimistic.
