Catholic bishop calls for legislations to address moral decadence in Nigeria
The Catholic bishop of Oyo diocese, Emmanuel Badejo, has called for more policies and legislations to address moral decadence and promote the wellbeing of Nigerians.
He stated this during a recent press conference on ‘Church and State Collaboration in Citizens’ Welfare and the Development of Society,’ held in Oyo.
“e Catholic diocese of Oyo currently runs 26 primary and secondary schools and other skills acquisition and empowerment centres in the state, where we provide qualitative education and moral formation for youth,” he said.
According to Badejo, governments at all levels should involve the youth in decision-making processes, community development initiatives and youth-oriented projects to empower and make them agents of positive change.
He further urged the government to monitor the e ectiveness of its youth intervention programmes, collate data and conduct evaluation to aid future strategies and actions.
According to him, the government should also do more in the areas of surveillance as well as security of lives and property.
Badejo equally calls on Oyo state government to provide nancial support for educational institutions own by the church and other credible private organisations. He also reiterated the call on the government to return all missions schools, especially Catholic schools to their original owners.
He stated that the act will help to widen the reach of missionary service, restore ethics in the education system, check crimes and bene t everyone, irrespective of their religious a liations. “We enjoin all with access to social media to avoid damaging and injurious activities and languages, and be more constructive to stimulate others toward ennobling and appropriate actions,” he said in regards to the forthcoming local government elections.
