Forum identifies options on farmers, herders’ clashes
A forum to support and inform the development, review and implementation of controlled grazing policy in Nigeria has drawn stakeholders in Kaduna in a bid to identify viable options and strategies for the effective management of the frequent clashes between farmers and herders.
Speaking at the forum, the Permanent Commissioner, Kaduna State Peace Commission, SalehMomale, attributed the break-down in inter-community relations to the absence of effective mechanism for the coordination of The Director-General, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON),OsitaAboloma,has tasked local industries and organizations in Nigeria to key intoquality and environmental management systems standards for enhancedmarket access and global relevance.
Speaking at a sensitization campaign in Sokoto, he noted that qualityand environmental management system standards were generic andintended to be applicable to any organization, regardless of type, size, product or service. use of resources particularly land, water and forests.
He said sometime in September last year, Synergos,in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, requested for a study to look out for some of the issues affecting pastoralists and farmers relations as well as the emerging policies on controlled grazing in Nigeria with particular focus on Kaduna, Kogi and Benue states.
The Field Manager,Synergos, Victor Adejoh, said the organization proposed the study to support the development of a comprehensive policy and action plan that would ensure mutual coexistence between pastoralists and local farming communities.
SON engages stakeholders on enhanced market access
The DG who was represented by the North-West Regional Coordinator, MrDaudaYakubu, pointed out that global trends in business requiredcompanies to get their systems certified to the relevant management systemstandards for enhanced market access, customer confidence,profitability (quality cost), and global relevance.
The Sokoto and Zamfara state Coordinator, Malam Bello Bosso,said the campaign was aimed at increasing both business andorganisations quality objectives in terms of better coordination,communication and capacity to deliver desired results.
