Forum identifies options on farmers, herders’ clashes

A forum to support and inform the developmen­t, review and implementa­tion of controlled grazing policy in Nigeria has drawn stakeholde­rs in Kaduna in a bid to identify viable options and strategies for the effective management of the frequent clashes between farmers and herders.

Speaking at the forum, the Permanent Commission­er, Kaduna State Peace Commission, SalehMomal­e, attributed the break-down in inter-community relations to the absence of effective mechanism for the coordinati­on of The Director-General, Standard Organisati­on of Nigeria (SON),OsitaAbolo­ma,has tasked local industries and organizati­ons in Nigeria to key intoqualit­y and environmen­tal management systems standards for enhancedma­rket access and global relevance.

Speaking at a sensitizat­ion campaign in Sokoto, he noted that qualityand environmen­tal management system standards were generic andintende­d to be applicable to any organizati­on, regardless of type, size, product or service. use of resources particular­ly land, water and forests.

He said sometime in September last year, Synergos,in collaborat­ion with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, requested for a study to look out for some of the issues affecting pastoralis­ts and farmers relations as well as the emerging policies on controlled grazing in Nigeria with particular focus on Kaduna, Kogi and Benue states.

The Field Manager,Synergos, Victor Adejoh, said the organizati­on proposed the study to support the developmen­t of a comprehens­ive policy and action plan that would ensure mutual coexistenc­e between pastoralis­ts and local farming communitie­s.

SON engages stakeholde­rs on enhanced market access

The DG who was represente­d by the North-West Regional Coordinato­r, MrDaudaYak­ubu, pointed out that global trends in business requiredco­mpanies to get their systems certified to the relevant management systemstan­dards for enhanced market access, customer confidence,profitabil­ity (quality cost), and global relevance.

The Sokoto and Zamfara state Coordinato­r, Malam Bello Bosso,said the campaign was aimed at increasing both business andorganis­ations quality objectives in terms of better coordinati­on,communicat­ion and capacity to deliver desired results.
