5 Nollywood stars who tried music careers (and failed)

There have been a number of actors that have found their niche in Nollywood scoring major breaks in blockbuster movies. But when they made their move to music, the same can’t be said as all came tumbling down in failure. This week, Weekend Magazine takes

- Hafsah Abubakar Matazu

Tonto Dikeh

The Tontolette’s break in the music scene is one of the most memorable with endless taunts online about how awful her singing and songs were. Her singles ‘Hi’ and ‘It’s Over’ received such negative feedback that Tonto decided to stop there and continue to flourish back in her comfort zone of acting.

Jim Iyke

The Nollywood superstar and heartthrob, Jim Iyke did enjoy a successful music career although it was very short lived. He made a track called ‘Who Am I’ with 2Face Idibia which received quite some airplay both on TV and radio. Apart from that, he also released an album ‘Born to Do This’ with a number of notable features but unfortunately, it didn’t do well.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

You’d think already establishing yourself as an A list celebrity would give you an upper hand when you venture into other things, but Omosexy was not an exception where it came to music flops. She released two albums with singles ‘Missing You,’ ‘Feel Alright’ and ‘Gba’ but made close to no impact on the airways or the charts. Omotola went back to acting on the big screen where she continues to shine.

Genevieve Nnaji

Back in 2005 after Genevieve got suspended from acting, she also decided to give music a shot too. She released a song titled ‘No More’ and got a recording deal in Ghana shortly after but this still wasn’t enough for her to make a mark in the Nigerian music scene. But afterwards, Genevieve’s acting career only further elevated with recognition both in Nigeria and abroad taking roles that have garnered her critical acclaim.

John Okafor

The highly successful and talented actor otherwise known as Mr. Ibu has made himself one of the most successful comedians in the movie industry. But for a moment, Mr. Ibu thought he had what it took to venture into the music scene releasing an album which gave him quite the shock when it flopped. Needless to say, Mr. Ibu retreated back to acting where he enjoys a successful career.
