Police nab Imo bank robbery kingpin

The police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Imo State havearrest­ed one of the armed robbers who struck at the Wethral Road Zenith Bank branch in Owerrion February 22, 2017 which resulted in the death of two policemen and one of the robbers.

The robbery later went viral on the social media with the arrested robber, Chinonso Gift Onwuegbuch­ulam, seen seizing money from the victim through Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.

The Commission­er of Police, Chris Ejike, yesterday paraded 29-year-oldChinons­o (alias Ogoli), who had remained at large since then.

Addressing newsmen at the state police command, Ezike said Chinonso confessed getting N400,000 from the robbery.

The commission­er said three members of the gang were arrested while four cars,some arms and ammunition were also recovered.

The commission­er said Chinonso, who hails from Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State, was arrested on February 21 from his hideout at Close 7 Mgbuakara Eleparawan, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“He has admitted that out of the N2.8 million they stole, he got a share of N400,000. He further confessed to have been in armed robbery since 2012 and had participat­ed in several robbery operations in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Owerri between 2012 and 2017.”
