Senate Leader: No cause for alarm over Electoral Act Bill

Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan (APC,Yobe) yesterday said there was no cause for alarm over the delay in the assent to the amendment made to the Electoral Act by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lawan stated this at the State House Villa, Abuja, 24 days after the fresh version of the amendment made to the 2010 Electoral Act was transmitted to the president for assent.

Both chambers of the National Assembly had in October passed the amendment made to the Electoral Act, approving the use of the card reader for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

The fresh amendment was as a result of certain observations made by President Buhari in the earlier bill passed and transmitted to him by both chambers of the federal.

“The electoral bill you are talking about has been sent back twice or thrice, that is to tell you that the president is willing to sign the bill provided it meets certain conditions that will make our electoral processes better and more sane.

“So, the president is studying this bill, it is not like you will send it to him and he will immediately sign,” he said.

4 die, 8 injured in Nasarawa auto crash

Four persons were confirmed dead while eight others were severely injured in a ghastly motor accident along the Akwanga to Nasarawa-Eggon highway in Nasarawa State yesterday.

The state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Feustina Alagbe said the vehicles involved were trucks, a Volkswagen Sharon Bus and a Peugeot J5 with 12 persons. The victims were rushed to Ola hospital in Akwanga where four people were confirmed dead. Among the survivors is a former Special Assistant to Governor Umaru Almakura on Media, Ahmed Tukur, who is currently responding to treatment at the Federal Medical Centre Keffi.”
