FG commended on handling xenophobic attacks

A non-government­al organizati­on, Northern Youth peace and Reconcilia­tion Initiative (NYPARI), has commended the Federal Government over the handling of the xenophobic crisis that erupted in South Africa.

The Director-General of the organizati­on Alhaji Auwal Lawan Uba disclosed this in a press statement in Abuja on Friday.

He condemned the xenophobic act and called on Nigerian youths to avoid the temptation of engaging in any reprisals.

Uba commended the Nigerian government for taking the steps it has taken so far with regards to her timely interventi­on both in protecting South African citizens as well as the diplomatic response.

10 KadPoly staff in India for rail engineerin­g training

The Kaduna Polytechni­c has sponsored ten academic staff for various training in railway engineerin­g in the India Railway Institute.

The head of Public Private Partnershi­p (PPP) Unit of the institutio­n, Dr Muktar Habib disclosed when he received officials of the Nigeria Infrastruc­ture Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) who were on a working visit.

He said the decision to sponsor the staff was part of the plan to open a railway engineerin­g department in the polytechni­c.

The Director ICRC, Alhaji Mohammed Bamali, said the aim of their visit was to further re-enforce the federal government policy on ease of doing business and the transparen­cy drive of President Muhammadu Buhari. Victims of flood that killed three people with scores missing and many houses submerged including two cemeteries said they are yet to receive any relief material from the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) and the Nasarawa Emergency Management Agency, (NASEMA).

The flood was due to hours of overnight torrential rain in Lafia and environs in Nasarawa State.

The Village Head of Unguwan Makama in Lafia, Malam Muhammad Aliyu Liman said, three people died, five houses collapsed and thirty houses were submerged in his area.

A victim of the flood, Alhaji Saidu Iliya of Filin Kura, Makama Primary School said, his house was submerged by the flood in River Amba, but he and others have not receive any relief material.

Chairman, Lafia Local Government Area, Alhaji Muazu Maifata said they have undertaken on the spot assessment and that they would assist the victims with relief material soon.

Executive Secretary of Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, (NASEMA), Mr Allu Maga did not say when they would deliver relief material to the victims.

We won’t wait for FG’s educationa­l policy – Emmanuel

The non-academic staff unions of the Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU) research institutes yesterday ended a 3-day peaceful protest to press home their demand for payment of their earned allowances.

The unions that comprise National Associatio­n of Academic Technologi­sts (NAAT), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Associatio­n of Nigerian Universiti­es (SSANU) represent staff of the university’s Institute for Agricultur­al Research (IAR), National Agricultur­al Extension Research and Liaisons Services (NAERLS), National Animal Production and Research Institute (NAPRI) and Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT).

A representa­tive of NAAT (IAR), Mr. Samuel Ogbonaya, said the unions had been struggling for the past seven years to be treated as part of ABU.

The Director, NAERLS, Professor Mohammed Khalid Othman advised the unions to dialogue with the management for a lasting solution to the lingering problem. The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has said the state will not wait for the educationa­l policy from the federal government.

Emmanuel stated that rather, the state will develop its own “home grown” educationa­l system.

Speaking yesterday in Uyo during Ebonyi State Government said it is targeting to vaccinate about 1.1million persons against yellow fever.

The vaccinatio­n will take place Izzi, Ebonyi and Abakiliki local government areas where the disease was recorded last month.

Those targeted are from ages nine Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has directed officials of his government who resigned to participat­e in the just concluded gubernator­ial primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to return to their offices with immediate effect.

The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, said that the directive followed his decision to reject their applicatio­ns to resign from office after due considerat­ion.
