‘Mandatory health insurance key to universal health coverage in Nigeria’
The Association of Catholic Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (ACMPN) has said that a mandatory contributory Social Health Insurance that includes formal and informal sectors will help fast track the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country.
The National President of the association, Dr Matthew Ashikeni, made the call yesterday in Abuja during the 15th national conference of the association, and Africa Regional Conference.
The theme of the conference is: “Universal Health Coverage (UHC) 2030 and Health Security: The role of Catholic doctors.”
Dr Ashikeni said pandemic might have affected the progress towards UHC by 2030 and hence, the need for the government agencies to integrate Catholic health institutions and other similar facilities so they complement each other in the provision of essential health services to all Nigerians.
He said there must be deliberate efforts in supporting these health institutions for synergy and the multiplier effects on the health of citizens without them suffering financial hardships.
Senator Chukwuka Utazi, Chairman Senate Committee on Primary Healthcare and Communicable Diseases, commended the Catholic church for its roles in health services, and enjoined Catholic medical practitioners to continue their good work to humanity.
