President Goodluck Jonathan has since last Tuesday been under attack in the social media over his visit to Kano State to welcome former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), a day after the country was thrown into mourning following the death of over 70 people in a bomb blast at a bus station in Nyanya, Abuja. President Jonathan did not only visit Kano to embrace Shekarau, he also made heavy politics of the event criticising the state’s governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Worse, Nigerians were infuriated to watch graphic pictures of their president dancing away at the event with the blast of the bombing still reverberating across Nigeria. Many Nigerians have described President Jonathan as being insensitive. Festus Keyamo, a human rights activist and lawyer described it as “very insensitive and irresponsible.” Speaking on Jonathan’s visit to the blast scene, Keyamo said: “It is just pretence, nothing but pretence. We ought to declare clear seven days of mourning for those victims. No political activities should take place with those seven days.” Other Nigerians who shared his view had a lot to say via social media. David Oluwafemi Peter Just a day after the incident at Nyanya in Abuja our dear president is out there in Kano doing something else. What a pity on my people and our nation. Tijani Asuku Power is transient, life is sacred and we are travellers. The campaign in Kano today in the face of gruesome murder of Nigerians is unpatriotic. Nnaeze Chris Emeka Mr. President, please leave political issues and tackle our security challenges . If this could happen in Abuja the seat of power then where is safe in Nigeria? Patrick Ikyaabo Nigerians now have a good reason to hold leadership responsible for the atrocities committed against innocent Nigerians. Esan Olawale Lateef This is madness. Total madness... one day it will get to their doorstep. Very insensitive. Mike Adeboye Nigeria has never experienced this before in her 53 years of nationhood. Not even in 1998 when we thought killings were many. Emeka Chukwudi Prince Nigerians turn everything to politics. What else can the president do? He visited the scene and victims. What else do you expect from him? He is not God. As his enemies fight hard to dislodge him, he does his best to say we shall overcome. People will always have something to say. No one can please the world.
