Bomb scare in Bayelsa

- From Chris Eze, Yenagoa

Residents of Yenezue-gene area of Yenagoa in Bayelsa State were thrown into panic yesterday when a man, who abandoned two big bags popularly known as “Ghana Must Go”, suspected to be explosives, fled when people in the area asked him to disclose the contents of the bags.

Sunday Trust gathered that the incident occurred about 2 p.m along the old PDP Road in Yenagoa.

The man, suspected to have come from the northern part of the country, was said to be carrying two (Ghanamust-go) bags when he was accosted by members of the public and some operatives of the Air Force.

Eye witness said instead of surrendering the bags to security operatives, the man abandoned them and ran away, heightening suspicion that he might be carrying dangerous materials.

“His action led to panic along the road. People fled the area and there was confusion. But shortly after that, men of the anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police arrived the scene”, the source said.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, in an interview said he dispatched the anti-bomb squad of his command to investigate the contents of the bags.

He said the operatives opened the bags and discovered they were loaded with electric wire.

“We recovered the bags. But they were containing only electric wire. There was no explosive in them. It could be that the man stole them.

“But we appreciate the efforts of members of the public because they didn’t touch the bags. We also appeal to them to continue to monitor their environment and report suspicious movements and objects to the police,” he said.
