- By Mansur Abubakar

Nigeria’s +4 handicap polo player, Bello Buba says, he is impressed with the state of polo playing pitches across the country.

According to Buba, the dream of the Nigeria Polo Federation to have better playing turf for the game has started yeilding fruits as most of the pitches are now well maintained.

The El Amin star who spoke to Sunday Trust in a telephone interview said,“gone are the days when if you have a match you start thinking of the state of the pitch for fear of accident either for yourself or your horse, to thank God that things are improving very well.”

Buba, the most rated Nigerian polo international player has won every accolade on the local scene, from the Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer to Player of the Decade since he burst onto the scene in 1986

“NPF has always maintained that upgrading Nigeria’s polo grounds to what is obtainable in highly developed countries is not an impossibility and they are doing all they can to step up the ante,” he said.

The Kaduna born

player maintained that his club, El Amin and all the other players still miss their late South African teammate,Duma, who was stabbed to death in 2012.

“He was a very talented player and an African like us so we were very fond of him.He added quality to the team and we are yet to fully replace him. Even in our last tournament we had to bring another foreigner to play his role.”

The +3 scorer, Duma, 25, was getting wave reviews for his performances and was on his way to a promising polo career before the Lidgetton, South Africa incident.
