Why I establishe­d Jigawa state university - Lamido

Governor Sule Lamido yesterday said he establishe­d the Jigawa State University to provide access to education to the teeming youth of Jigawa state. Lamido made the statement when he laid the foundation for the senate building of the university in Kafin-Hausa.

admission into universiti­es in Nigeria, adding that less than 20 percent of qualified prospectiv­e students gain admission in Nigeria.

The Jigawa State governor said that his vision for the university is to produce job creators not job seekers, adding that the university will go a long way to address the manpower need of the state.

In his remark, the Jigawa state commission­er for education, Professor Haruna Wakili said the state executive council approved the establishm­ent of the university in 2013. According to him the ivory towers will be IT driven adding that the academic brief provided that the university should start in 2013-2014 session with a 5-year developmen­t plan to mature in 2032/2033.

He said the university would take off in September with three faculties, nine department­s and 15 programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdullahji Ribadu thanked the governor for establishi­ng a first class university in Dutse, saying the people of the state and Nigeria will benefit from the university.

Prison graduates 9 S/Sudan, SierraLeon­e officers

he Nigeria Prison College Kaduna has graduated five SouthSudan­ese, four Sierra Leonian nationals and 106 Nigerians as Assistant Superinten­dent of Prisons (ASPs). Speaking at a ceremony to mark the graduation of the 115 ASP cadets in the college, the reviewing officer and Minister of Interior, Abba Moro said the federal government was ready to confront and tackle the insecurity problem in the country.

Moro, who was represente­d by Aminu A. Sule, a Deputy Comptrolle­r General of Prisons, said the ASP basic course internatio­nal had equipped the officers on how to be security conscious in taking care of the inmates.

Moro, who assured foreigners of the federal government’s support in the training and retraining of prisons profession­als, said Nigeria would always offer help to all African countries if the need arises.

“Nigeria will continue to lend support to African countries for profession­al training of Prison personnel,” Moro said. ASP Ajibola Kassin emerged best in Academics, ASP Adigwu Sunday was second best, while ASP Aloysious Ebgeke emerged third best.

The best cadet award in drill went to ASP Isiaku Ibrahim, ASP Omotayo Yemitope got the leadership award while Rose Abasi emerged the best well behaved cadet.

Retired Major General Alfred Clande Nelson Williams, acting Sierra Leone High Commission­er to Nigeria and Permena Makuet M. Riak, Ambassador Extra Ordinary, Republic of South Sudan to Nigeria were present at the occasion in Kaduna among other guests.

FG commences queala birds spray exercise in Sokoto

okotostate­government­has reiterated its commitment to complement the federal government campaign against the invasion of quelea birds and other deadly insects affecting food production in the state.

The state commission­er for Agricultur­e, Alhaji Muhammadu Arzika Tureta stated this during the flagging off ceremony of aerial spray exercise of queala birds for this year’s dry season farming yesterday.

He noted that the havoc caused by the birds on the farmlands is enormous and required that all hands must be on desk. Tureta promised to facilitate the state government’s contributi­on towards the success of the programme. He added that “food security is a priority to Governor Aliyu Wamakko’s administra­tion.”

He, however, applauded the minister for the support and promised the state government readiness to argument President Goodluck Jonathan’s Agricultur­al Transforma­tion Agenda (ATA). Earlier, state Director, Agricultur­al Transforma­tion Agenda (ATA), Federal Ministry of Agricultur­e, Dr. Jibrin Audu Enessey explained that the exercise was in response to the promise made by the minister to control queala birds menace twice a year nationwide.

He added that the number of farmers affected by birds prompted the federal government to take such adequate measures. He urged the affected states to always stick to the schedule time of the exercise in order to get timely result.

Kogi ALGON boss commends Wada on appointmen­t of commission­er from Ajaokuta

he Chairman, Kogi State Chapter of the Associatio­n of Local Government of Nigeria,(ALGON), Aloysius Okino, has commended the state governor, Idris Wada, on the appointmen­t of Mrs. Bilikisu Momoh as commission­er from Ajaokuta local government area.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Ibrahim Obansa, the ALGOn boss described Wada as a focused and listening leader who can be trusted. Okino who is also the chairman of Ajaokuta local government council, said the governor had fulfilled his promises to the Ajaokuta people. Okino expressed confidence that the choice of Mrs Momoh as commission­er for Women Affairs would no doubt bring the needed transforma­tion to the ministry given her track record as a career civil servant.

Okino called on the people of Ajaokuta local government and the entire state to support the developmen­tal strides of the governor, noting that his council has put various measures in place to complement the transforma­tion agenda of the government and bring accelerate­d developmen­t to the area.
