We’re Being Embarrassed, Lament Ladies Who Wear Hijab In Kano

-

ordained that women should cover their bodies and beauty from the gaze of men who are not their husbands or blood relatives. The injunction is for the good of the society because it will guard against promiscuity,” she said.

She, however, said that no amount of intimidation would stop them from using hijab. She added that, as Muslims, no amount of conspiracy would stop them from appreciating the beauty of Islam.

“This trend will not make us look at the teachings of our religion with disdain. This is because all that is ordained by our creator is for the betterment of humanity, not just the Muslims. I am therefore advising the Muslim Ummah to continue to look at women in hijab with respect despite the ugly development. It is only our creator that will protect them against the evil of the day,” she concluded.

Hajiya Hauwa Muhammad, a business woman also narrated how a woman was embarrassed when she approached some men to ask about the house of a certain man. At first they replied that they didn’t know the man, but when she insisted, they all ran away and left her bewildered.

Another victim, Hajiya Fatima Adamu, narrated how she was embarrassed when she sat in front of an office, waiting to collect some credentials. Different people kept coming, asking why she was sitting there.

“I felt very bad that people were asking what I was waiting for with suspicion. I was just wondering what to do when the officer I was waiting for finally arrived and I was given my papers.”

A female lecturer who spoke on condition of anonymity wondered why a woman with hijab should be stigmatised. “I wonder why women with hijab should be stigmatised because female suicide bombers used it to carry out their attacks. Have they not been using the military uniform as camouflage to carry out their attacks in the past? Why is the military not stigmatised or intimidated?” She queried.

A resident of the city, Malam Muhammad Adamu, however, told Sunday Trust that he had advised ladies in his house to stop using the hijab.

“I have advised them to stop using the hijab because of the present security situation. They should use the traditional veil instead,’’ he said.

A female Islamic scholar, who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, said the use of hijab is not the only option for the Muslim women. According to her, a very thick and large material could as well serve as a veil for the Muslim woman.

“It is not compulsory for women to use this type of hijab we are using today. They can use a thick and big material called Julbab as a covering,’’ she said.

Speaking in the same vein, Malam Isa Muhammad said because of the problem associated with the use of hijab now, Muslim women could revert to the traditional mode of covering used by women in the past, where a very large and thick material was used as hijab.

“Nobody is saying women must wear hijab as it is now. They can alternatively adopt the type of hijab used by our parents in the past,’’ he said.

He, however, cautioned them against using the transparent veil, saying such a veil does not fulfill the condition of Islamic modest dressing.
