Nigerians hail Jonathan for conceding defeat
Following the announcement of General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) as winner of the 2015 presidential elections, President Goodluck Jonathan has received lots of accolades and commendations both nationally and globally for his humility after conceding defeat. This singular act of humility moved a football enthusiast Mr. John Eli to say “For Mr President to accept a defeat and congratulate his opponent means that he loves Nigeria and has the good of the common man in his heart,” (Sahara Reporters)
In a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday April 1st 2015, while thanking Nigerians for coming out en-masse during the elections, he added “I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word. I have also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process. That is one legacy I will like to see endure”. He also added “I have conveyed my personal best wishes to General Muhammadu Buhari”.
This move by the president has been a topic of discussion in so many quarters especially the online fora such as Facebook and other online sites as netizens were not left out in commending him. One of them Ayotunde 1000 had this to say: “This is really brave and bold. I salute you for this sir, even as one of the highest critics of your administration, this for a Nigerian politician, is a legacy that is worth emulating. Enjoy your coronation and reign as the Olotu of Otuoke”.
Without mincing words, Vou Dalyop posted on Facebook “My heart and respect goes to my able President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. YOU made credible elections possible. YOU are a good man, a listening and humble President”.
While Jey Doubles described him as an incredible person, another netizen Ayoka stated “President Jonathan is actually the hero of this election; by allowing votes to count and gallantly conceding defeat he has won for himself and the country the respect that his win no matter how transparent wouldn’t have achieved”.
Then Aldame AD added: “GEJ is the man of the moment. That congratulatory message is priceless”
