Aremu faults critics of Buhari’s appointments

- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos

General Secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), Comrade Issa Aremu has faulted the controversy over the appointments of the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and others recently made by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Aremu noted that though the debate over the propriety of the President’s appointments was a sign that Nigeria has advanced democratically, it is a needless debate.

He spoke in Lagos during a reception for Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Trejo Sosa who visited the textile union office in Ikeja.

He said rather than looking at the tribal affiliation of the appointees, Nigerians should be more concerned with the content of their characters.

According to him, discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social, justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance and patriotism are some of the yardsticks upon which the appointees should be examined.

Besides, he added that Nigeria should look at their capacity to assist the President in delivering on his threepoint agenda of fighting corruption, tackling insurgency and reviving the economy.

“What value do the newly appointees bring to the presidential table to realize this agenda we all overwhelmingly voted for in the last free and fair polls? These are the questions that need answers not the current verbal war of diversion.

Aremu expressed confidence in the capacity of the President to deliver on his promises to Nigerians, saying, “he has an eye on bigger picture of nation building. We must trust and support him with informed engagement.” He added, “If we all dispassionately appreciate the above radical policy decisions, the recent appointments should not divert attention from constructive suggestions to make the appointees work.
