Tackle street begging, Sultan tells Tambuwal
Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has urged Sokoto government to take measures to tackle street begging in the state, just as Governor Aminu Tambuwal appealed to Islamic Scholars to publicly to preach it.
Speaking at the inauguration of the distribution of assorted foodstuffs and items worth over N157.8 million as zakkat and endowment to the needy in the state, the Sultan and the governor said the call was necessitated by the happenings in the state.
Tambuwal said it was necessary for the Islamic scholars to speak against it as street begging portrays Islam in bad light.
The governor also added that street begging serves as license for some people to engage in other social vices.
He called on parents to provide good moral upbringing and education for their children and assured of his administration’s continued support to the zakkat and Endowment committee to discharge its assignment diligently.
The governor stressed the need for wealthy Muslims to give out zakkat and endowment as enjoined by Islam, as this will enhance peace and stability in the society.
Sultan Abubakar III on his part, urged people to assist the less privileged particularly orphans, widows and charged the Northern Governors Forum to assist Internally Displaced Persons in the North-east.
Among items distributed were 100 bags of rice, 100 sewing machines, 50 mattresses, 100 grinding machines, 3,000 cartons of tomato paste, 20 deep freezers as well as cash.
