My ordeal in kidnappers den – El-Rufai’s campaign coordinator

- From Maryam Ahmadu-Suka, Kaduna

The Kachia Government Campaign Coordinator of Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai during the last election, Dr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Durunguwa, who was kidnapped in Kaduna Local recently, at the weekend narrated his experience to Daily Trust on Sunday.

Durunguwa, who is also the Sardaunan Ladduga, said, “I spent about five days with them before they brought me back home on Tuesday at 8.30pm. They blind folded me, so I do not know what they look like, but I thank God that I am alive and back home with my family”.

On how much ransom was paid before his release, he said, “they demanded N20 million, but I do not know if they got that amount or not because I was not the one who handled it and I have not seen my cousin who handled the matter up till now. Prayers and good wishes of people must have softened their hearts to bring me back.”

Asked if he was maltreated by his abductors, he said, “All I know is that I got one dirty slap that did not hurt me much, but the pains I went through, the trauma, I will not wish that even on my worst enemy.”

He added that kidnapping in Nigeria would continue until government at all levels address youth unemployment.

“The government must work hard to check the menace. One thing I observed was that my abductors are graduates. If people graduate from the university and there are no jobs, they will go into this kind of nonsense because they are young and energetic with digital technology.

“The government should try and find a lasting solution to the problem, if not, all of us will not have peace. Women were among the abductors, so its not only men that are engaged in the crime.”
