Kano spends N2.6bn on education
In a bid to reposition education, the Kano State government has disbursed the sum of N2.6billion to various departments in the sector. The state commissioner for information, Garba Mohammed, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday.
A breakdown of the disbursement shows that over N246million was allocated to examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), as well as internal examinations prepared by the Kano Educational Resource Department (KERD). The sum of N404million was also released for the accreditation of tertiary institutions like the Kano State University of Technology (KUT), Kano State Polytechnic, College of Agriculture, as well as additional salaries for professors.
He further said that scholarships for external students, internal students, students studying in France, Cairo and Cyprus, took N75 million, N50 million, N70 million, N33.8 million and N79 million respectively.
On primary and secondary education, Mohammed said that over N589 million and N383 million were spent on school feeding. Also, N106 million was released for science secondary schools while N100 million was for primary schools.
Mohammed said the Kano State government was determined to make education affordable to the people of the state.
