Kano spends N2.6bn on education

In a bid to reposition education, the Kano State government has disbursed the sum of N2.6billion to various department­s in the sector. The state commission­er for informatio­n, Garba Mohammed, disclosed this while briefing journalist­s in Abuja yesterday.

A breakdown of the disburseme­nt shows that over N246millio­n was allocated to examinatio­n bodies such as the National Examinatio­ns Council (NECO), the West African Examinatio­ns Council (WAEC), the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), as well as internal examinatio­ns prepared by the Kano Educationa­l Resource Department (KERD). The sum of N404millio­n was also released for the accreditat­ion of tertiary institutio­ns like the Kano State University of Technology (KUT), Kano State Polytechni­c, College of Agricultur­e, as well as additional salaries for professors.

He further said that scholarshi­ps for external students, internal students, students studying in France, Cairo and Cyprus, took N75 million, N50 million, N70 million, N33.8 million and N79 million respective­ly.

On primary and secondary education, Mohammed said that over N589 million and N383 million were spent on school feeding. Also, N106 million was released for science secondary schools while N100 million was for primary schools.

Mohammed said the Kano State government was determined to make education affordable to the people of the state.
