Moses edges Iwobi as Chelsea defeat Arsenal

- By Mansur Abubakar

The battle between Nigeria’s duo Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses ended with the latter’s team Chelsea overcoming his compatriot’s Arsenal 3-1 to confirm bragging rights as far as the English Premier League London Derby was concerned. The two Super Eagles stars started the game in direct contact with each other as Moses’ left wing back position pitted him against Iwobi who was attacking from the left for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side. The former Wigan Athletic player won most of the duels as his awareness and stamina meant his ‘Gunners’ counterpart couldn’t get past him whenever the need arose before he was drafted into middle towards the ending minutes of the match.

Yesterday’s result meant Moses and Chelsea teammates including Eden Hazard who scored a memorable solo goal move a step closer to winning the Premier League to make it their second in three years.

The Blues led 1-0 at half-time thanks to Marcos Alonso’s controversial headed goal; however, it was Hazard’s 53rd-minute strike that brought the house down in west London.

The Belgian forward beat several Arsenal players during a run that started inside his own half before beating Petr Cech, who gifted Cesc Fabregas a third with a poor clearance.

The visitors managed a late consolation through Olivier Giroud’s header, with Chelsea now 12 points clear of their title rivals, although Liverpool and Tottenham are expected to close the gap in the next couple of games.

Both Moses and Iwobi will be vital for Nigeria as the country’s quest for a second successive FIFA World Cup appearance enters business end of the campaign especially in the double header against Cameroon in August.
