Yobe LG polls witness low turnout

- From Hamisu Matazu, Damaturu Kabir

The turnout in yesterday’s local government election in Yobe State was generally low but peaceful.

Daily Trust on Saturday observed accreditation and voting going on the same time.

Our correspondent who monitored the election in Damaturu, Fune and Potiskum local government areas reports that election materials arrived on time and the voting commences promptly.

An Electoral Officer, in Potiskum, who does not want to be named, revealed that there was apathy on the side of women voters.

“We accredited 136 voters and they all voted. Of the number, only 3 are women,” he said.

In Mamudo town, along Potiskum-Damaturu highway, it was observed that the male population out-numbered the women voters.

In Damaturu, the state capital, the turnout was not so impressive in some polling units visited at Pindigari, Mairi ‘A’, Mairi ‘B’, Ali Marami and Ajari wards.

A voter at Mairi ‘B’, Ahmad Baana, attributed the low turn out to the sudden withdrawal of major opposition Peoples Democratic Party from the race.

Yobe Deputy Governor, Engineer Abubakar D. Ali who cast his ballot at his Yindiski Polling Unit in Dogo Nini Ward of Potiskum Local Government expressed satisfaction with voter turnout and enthusiasm.
