Only 280 crafts teachers in Kano - survey
Asurvey by development Research and Projects Centre, (dRPC), has revealed that the Kano State Education Resource Department, (KERD), has only 280 craft teachers for 77,299 students.
This was disclosed by Professor Bala Ado Kofar Mata of the Centre for African Entrepreneurship Research and Training, at a oneday workshop on connecting craft education to income generation for secondary school-age girls organised for Kano and Jigawa states.
The workshop was organised by dRPC under its Partnership to Strengthen Innovation and Practices in Secondary Education (PSIPSE).
He said the figure gave a ratio of 1-200, a figure the survey described as inadequate to acceptable global educational standards.
According to him, the teaching of craft subjects will assist in expanding empowerment opportunities for girls to conveniently allow them easy access and acceptability to the labour market. The NERDC North-West Coordinator, Dr. Olakunke Akinsola, stated that the center has concluded arrangements to review the curriculum and that all the lapses identified would be looked into for necessary action.
