- By Fidelis Mac-Leva

The Bingham University in affiliation with Imogen and Associates Nigeria Limited and the Roman Institute for International Studies, Scotland, will commence Master’s and Doctorate degree programmes in Terrorism and International Security Studies in Abuja, next September. The programme which would be the first of its kind in Nigeria and in the SubSaharan African region would lead to the award of M.Sc., M.Phil. and PhD degrees in Terrorism and International Studies, the organisers said.

One of the programme coordinators, Dr Amaechi Nwaokolo, said prospective candidates for the programmes are expected to possess a very sound first degree (preferably 2.1) in Politics, History, International Relations or related subjects.

He said while the forms for the Master’s degree programme sell for N20, 500 those for the PhD are selling for N25, 000 at the EFT Library building of the NAOWA Institute of Management and Technology (NIMTA), Mambilla Barracks, Abuja.

Nwaokolo, who is a terrorism scholar said the introduction of the programme was informed by the need to educate people on terrorism, especially in the face of current security challenges facing Nigeria, the African continent and, indeed the world.

He said terrorism is a mind game whose concept and psychology need to be adequately studied before dealing with the menace.

“The Algerian example has clearly shown that terrorism can be defeated but the more people are educated the easier to defeat terror. You cannot defeat something you don’t understand; this is why this programme which is the first of its kind is being introduced in Nigeria,’’ he said.
