Osinbajo warns civil servants against corruption

- By Isiaka Wakili

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has warned civil servants against corruption, asking them to embrace the new culture of transparency and accountability.

The acting president gave the warning at the Old Banquet Hall of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja at the 2017 Nigeria Civil Service Week Dinner and Award held Friday night.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mohammed Bello, described civil servants as government’s representatives whose actions or inactions were used as parameter to judge government.

The acting president stated that the present administration was committed to repositioning the civil service for effective and efficient service delivery.

Osinbajo urged the civil servants to work hard in order to enhance the implementation of the administration’s agenda which, according to him, is centred on “stabilizing the micrographic environment, achieving agriculture and food security, ensuring energy sufficiency in power and petroleum products, improving transportation infrastructure, driving industrialization with focus on SMEs and promoting the informal markets with particular attention to production and consumption of made-in-Nigeria goods and services.”

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting local industries, stimulating national economic growth and creating better environment for businesses; saying “the Executive Orders that were issued recently is a further attestation to this and they are meant to drive the made-in-Nigeria initiative with a view to increasing the demand for locally manufactured goods and services.

In her remarks, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, said her office was desirous of building “an incorruptible civil service that will be an epitome of integrity.”

According to her, the goals include ensuring a new efficient civil service producing the maximum possible output with the minimum amount of input or resources provided by the government; creating a well-trained and motivated professional workforce poised to provide world-class service.
