Dealing with gingivitis

- HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

Many people focus attention mainly on their teeth. Who doesn’t want white and healthy teeth for a dazzling smile? But while carried away by the thought of how our teeth look, we tend to neglect another important aspect of our mouths: the gums.

Gingivitis, otherwise known as inflammation of the gums, is caused by plaque, which is brought about by neglected and untreated gums. When gums are left uncared for, it can develop to become a serious health issue that can result in tooth loss.

You can tell if you have gingivitis by taking a look at your gums. Many people may have it but not realise until they become aware of the symptoms which include tender and swollen gums, bleeding, spaces inbetween their teeth and gums or an incessant bad taste or bad breath.

Gingivitis can be avoided or treated by engaging in simple, yet effective ways that involve proper care and attention given to the gums. Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing to remove food particles that may harbour bacteria and cause plaque is a start. Also, eating balanced diet rich in vitamins; especially vitamins B and C, is also very important, and using antibacterial mouthwash or warm salt solution to rinse your mouth will aid in killing bacteria hiding in-between the gum pockets and teeth.

Also, never neglect going for regular checkup to your dentist. Prevention is indeed better than cure; and your dentist will have all the answers to all your oral-related problems. With additional information from the internet
