National Open Karate championsh­ip holds November 21

The Nigeria Karate Federation is organizing a National Open Championsh­ip to be staged from November 21 to 25 at the Indoor Sports Hall Package ‘B’ of the Abuja National stadium.

A statement from the organizing committee revealed that the championsh­ip would be in different weight categories for male and female athletes.

According to the committee, there will be individual Kata Male and Female, Kumite female in -50kg, -55kg, -61kg, -68kg, +68kg and Team Kumite.

There will also be Kumite male in the following weight categories -60kg, -67kg, -75kg, -84 and +84.

To ensure a hitch-free championsh­ip, the federation has appointed a five man organizing committee to be headed by FCT acting Director of Sports, Chief Dilichukwu Onyedinma.

Other members of the committee are Dr. Bello, Mr. Dave Jegede, Hajiya Zainab Saleh and Evelyn Fabunmi as secretary.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, president of the Karate Federation, and Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Hon. Silas Agara said the championsh­ip was in fulfillmen­t of one of his campaign promises.

He said he had promised to ensure regular competitio­ns for the athletes and the November event is just the beginning of the series of activities that have been lined up.

The former commission­er of sports in Nasarawa State also said the Abuja National Open will bring together some of the best athletes who would compete for honours in their weight categories.

He said budding athletes to be discovered at the event would be nurtured to represent Nigeria in internatio­nal competitio­ns.

“We are working towards staging a national open championsh­ip in Abuja from November 21 to 25.

“A committee made up of credible and knowledgea­ble Nigerians is putting together everything that is needed for a hitch free championsh­ip.

“During our inaugurati­on we did promise to ensure steady flow of tournament­s for our athletes so this championsh­ip is in fulfillmen­t of that solemn pledge,” he said.
