- From Christiana T. Alabi, Kaduna

Kidnappers and armed robbers suspected to have been chased out of Sabuwar Gayan last week have taken to the highway, terrorizing travellers.

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that the assailants at about 8am yesterday stormed the highway between Sabuwar Gayan and Dutse, shooting sporadically and robbing people. It was gathered that two people were abducted during the operation.

A traveller who does not want his name mentioned said some motorists on hearing sounds of gun shots immediately reversed while some parked far away for safety.

In a video clip made available to our correspondent, a traveller said, “at about 8.00am today (yesterday) we were on our way to Kano through the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. Unfortunately there were shootings by kidnappers ahead of us. Ironically the policemen who were a few meters away were watching helplessly. May God bring relief to this nation”.

A driver who plies the highway, Malam Sani also told Daily Trust on Sunday that the kidnappers had earlier blocked the Abuja-Kaduna highway on Friday to rob motorists and passengers travelling for the weekend.

Unconfirmed reports say three passengers were abducted between Sabuwar Gayan, Dutse and Gwagwada on Friday.

A resident, Malam Umar, whose brother was on the highway when the attack occurred lamented the situation, saying action must be taken fast.

According to him, due to activities of kidnappers and robbers, a lot of people have abandoned farming for fear of the unknown.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in Kaduna State, Mukhtar Aliyu, said he was going to call back but never díd. And when our correspondent attempted to reach him a second time, she was not successful.
