Navy foils attacks on foreign vessels in Lagos

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The Nigerian Navy said Friday that it foiled about four attacks on cargoes around the Lagos waters, and arrested some persons. Though, the names of the vessels could not be ascertained as at press time, it was gathered that the vessels contained oil.

It said that the sea robbers had laid siege around the Lagos anchorage and were about to strike when some naval operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), BEECROFT, stopped them.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Sylvanus Abbah, who made this disclosure while playing host to some French Naval officers, said all four unsuccessful attacks occurred in the last ten months.

The French Naval officers arrived Lagos waters on Wednesday aboard a French war ship.

Admiral Abbah, while fielding questions from newsmen said countries of the world were now shifting their attention to the Gulf of Guinea.

He said the Gulf of Guinea is becoming a hotspot for countries, stressing that every part of the world is becoming interested in what goes on around the gulf.

The Commanding Officer of the ship, Commander Daetan Gayraud, who led the French naval team, told journalists that the visit was aimed at strengthening cooperation between both countries.

He said the entire 100 crew members were very delighted about the visit.

“I hope the existing cooperation between the two navies will continue. We will be in Nigeria for two days after which we will proceed to Gabon”, he said.
