Police in Niger rescue village head, 3 others from abductors
The Chairman of Media Trust Limited, publishers of the Daily Trust titles, Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, was last night presented with the New Telegraph Media Icon of the year award.
He was one of the awardees at the 2017 New Telegraph Awards held in Lagos.
Yusuf was given an award for his astuteness and versatility, “which is recognized within and beyond the shores of Nigeria as a transformative industry pioneer, setting the pace for a better Nigeria.”
The New Telegraph management specifically recognized his foresight in setting up Daily Trust which it noted has contributed to the growth of the media industry. The award was received on his behalf by the Associate Director (Business), Media Trust Limited, Mr. Aliu Akoshile.
Yusuf commended the management of New Telegraph for the honour, noting that the award came at a time Daily Trust is holding the title of number one newspaper in Nigeria.
Twenty three awards representing different categories were presented at the event. Among the awardees were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who bagged the Political Icon of the year; Governor of Kano, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje (Outstanding Governor in Health and Education); Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto (Governor of the year), Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe (Outstanding Governor in Infrastructure Development); Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State (Man of the Year) among others.
The police in Niger State yesterday said they rescued Malam Haruna Gizo, the village head of Unguwan Gizo of Kagara Local Government Area of the state and three others from their abductors.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Austine Agbonlahor, told newsmen in Minna that they were rescued during a joint operation by Kagara police and a vigilance group from Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
He said the command was taking proactive security measures to deal with any form of security threat.
He added that “we have deployed sufficient security personnel to identified areas prone to criminal activities across the state.
“We will continue to adopt proactive security measures to confront any form of threat to enable residents to move on with their legitimate businesses.”
He called for more cooperation from the public to enable the police to rid the state of criminals.
The village head and others were abducted on Nov. 21 at Unguwan Gizo in Kagara Local Government Area of Niger State.
