IGP, please stop the attacks on Abuja- Kaduna

- Ibrahim Abdullahi wrote from Kaduna

Almost on a daily basis we hear reports of attacks on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road. And during most of the attacks, motorists are robbed while some persons are kidnapped. One wonders what exactly is happening on that road and it is rather sad that despite the attacks nothing tangible has been done to quell it. When the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was shut and traffic was diverted to that route, attacks reduced because security was beefed up in that area. If we could achieve that then, it means that it is possible to tackle the horrible situation on that route. The importance of that route in the nation cannot be overemphasised so the police and government cannot afford to take the situation lightly. On a daily basis, lives are being lost while families of kidnapped persons are made to part with huge sums of money.

There is an urgent need for the police authorities’ to rise up to the occasion before the situation gets worse than it is at the moment. Heavily armed policemen should be deployed to that area, especially to flash points to protect lives and property. Also notices should be placed at flash points to warn motorists. The road should also be rehabilitated to ease movement and to check criminals who are using the bad spots to attack motorists. There is also a need to do something about the forest. A special operation should be launched on that forest to chase out the criminals. We do not need another Sambisa forest. The deaths on the Abuja- Kaduna road are avoidable and there must be stopped as soon as possible. The criminals cannot be seen to be having a field day. Any criminal caught along that route should be severely punished to serve as deterrent to others.
