Why you should cut down on your sugar intake

Everyone is guilty of taking too much sugar in their meals, drinks and sweets. But opting for natural sugar in fruits and vegetables is best for your body. Therefore, it is advisable to take sweeteners instead of sugar.

Doctor Seyi Adeosun, a consultant at the National Hospital, Abuja, said taking too much sugar can lead to deadly diseases: it adds to weight gain which leads to obesity, foods make the belly bigger because they are high in calories. The more calories you consume, the heavier you will be. The brain craves for sugar more than fats which may cause you to overeat.

Too much sugary foods and drinks can also destroy teeth and can harm the liver, which may eventually lead to cancer. Sugar acts like poison when taken in high doses. Hyper-sweet foods can be addictive and had to stop consuming. Sugary soda consumptio­n may lead to kidney damage and subsequent­ly high blood pressure too.

Women are advised to cut down on their sugar intake because the repercussi­on causes a lot of damage during childbirth and while on their monthly flow.

Children, most especially, like sugary snacks, sweets, chocolates and the like, which are bad for the health.

Eating a diet rich in foods with low sugar like grains, fruits and vegetables don’t cause blood sugar to spike. Therefore, change your eating habit and eat food stuff with less sugar, watch what you eat and live a healthy life.
