Tby Abubakar Adam here was music. There was food. And there were colours. That was how the Korean National and Cultural Day was celebrated, Wednesday, in Abuja.
The feast, which took place at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, drew huge crowds of fancifully dressed government officials, diplomats, cultural enthusiasts and friends of Korea in Nigeria.
The centerpiece of the night was the performance of Funny Band, a six-man jazz band that, as the name suggested, brought some humour into their performances of Korean classics like Arirang, and popular music and well-known rhymes from across the world.
They left the audience thrilled and excited, compelling Madeleine Nnaji, a guest, to comment; “I have never really enjoyed music with humour before as I have tonight. I think the band did a fabulous job of mixing both.”
After the performance, the reception moved to the fountain side of the Transcorp, where an expansive buffet of traditional Korean cuisine was laid out and guests lined up to help themselves, mingling and eating to the sound of traditional Korean music in the background.
Speaking earlier, the Charge d’ Affairs of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Abuja Mr. Yong-min Song appreciated the guests for coming to celebrate their day while drawing attention to the recent missiles test by North Korea and its threat to security on the Korean Peninsula.
“We appeal to our friend, Nigeria, to join other members of the international community to strongly condemn the actions of North Korea and ensure continued peace on the Korean Peninsula,” he said.
