Pyem stool tussle: Supreme Court fixes hearing for Nov. 13

- By Adelanwa Bamgboye

The Supreme Court has fixed November 13, 2018, to hear a fresh appeal challenging the selection of Joseph Mato Dakat as the the Sumpyem of Pyem Chiefdom in Mangu Local Government Council of Plateau State.

Hearing notice was issued to parties to the appeal on Friday by the apex court. After the hearing, the apex court will deliver the final judgment.

The appellants -Arch Hudu Ibrahim Mamomi and Adbullahi Abbas, the Galadima Gindiri, said that Joseph Mato Dakat should be stopped from parading himself as the Sumpyem of Pyem, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal by the Supreme Court.

The appellants are seeking the order of court setting aside the decision of the Court of Appeal, Jos Division, delivered on January 26, 2012, which nullified the selection exercise of May 17, 2004, that produced Arch. Hudu Ibrahim Mamomi as the Sumpyem of Pyem Chiefdom.

The appellants are also seeking an order affirming the decision of the High Court of Plateau State delivered on April 13, 2006 in Suit No. PLD/J/285/2004, which upheld the election of Arch. Hudu Ibrahim, as the Sumpyem of Pyem Chiefdom.

The appellants want the apex court to make consequential orders directing the Mangu LG council and the Plateau State government (3rd and 4th respondents ) to install Arch. Hudu Ibrahim Mamomi as the Sumpyem of Pyem Chiefdom with the payment of all accrued benefits and entitlements right from 17th May, 2004 till the date of judgment in the appeal.

The decision of the apex court shall bring to an end the lingering leadership tussle on the Sumpyem stool of Pyem Chiefdom and douse confusion and tension in the area.
