Coping with mental health during the festive season

- by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

Let’s face it, as much as we look forward to Christmas, we also dread the stress that comes with it. The ups and downs, the preparations towards it, making sure the day turns out perfect, are bound to take a toll on you. Dr. Muhammad Umar of Bwari General Hospital emphasized that it is very important to look after yourself in order to prevent any distress that may affect you mentally. That’s why this week, we have broken down all you should go so that this year, Christmas blows over without you having a mental breakdown.

Talk to someone: If you are stressed out or feel too overwhelmed, let someone know. Don’t box it up and decide that you have to face everything yourself. You have people who care about you all around you. Talk to them, you will see that all that’s weighed down on your shoulders feels a lot lighter.

Take a break: You have to rest. Sit down every now and then, take a nap or meditate; whatever it is that will make you feel rested and revitalised afterwards. Rest is key to less stressful time.

Exercise: Perhaps opt for yoga, or something on the softer side. It will help you realise all the bad energy and tenseness you feel in your body. And by the time you are done, you will be able to feel the difference.

Prepare for family gathering beforehand: By prepare, we mean mentally. Family gatherings can be a bit overwhelming and daunting, most especially if you are the host. So tell yourself that you will take it one step at a time, and if something goes wrong, it isn’t the end of the world.

Spoil yourself: Give yourself some ‘me’ time. You deserve it. Indulge in your guilty pleasures by doing activities that will make you feel better. Read a good book or whatever it is you know you love to do With additional information from the internet
