Why you should not overfeed during Xmas

- by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

The Christmas period is here! It is a season of merrymaking with friends and loved ones, accompanied with delicious foods and drinks shared around. But we oftentimes find ourselves overfeeding due to the array of yummy treats. Dr. John Ankama of Nasara Specialist Hospital, Kaduna, tells us that overfeeding can lead to a lot of discomfort, stomach aches, weight gain and high cholesterol and sugar levels, which are all very unhealthy side effects. Here’s why you should seriously consider not overfeeding this Christmas.

It affects your digestion: If you overeat, your stomach will have to expand to accommodate all the food. This will cause it to push against the organs nearest to it, thereby causing the discomfort you may feel afterwards.

It overworks your organs; Your body has to work hard to break down all the food. So, all the organs that produce enzymes to break it down have to work extra hard to do so.

Your metabolism rate is affected: Your metabolism rate will have to speed up to burn up all those extra calories. This may make you sweat more than usual or feel usually hot, even in the coldest of weather.

Obesity: It may not be immediately, but it will happen eventually. All those calories your body isn’t able to burn will be stored as fat, causing weight gain.

Heartburn: Overeating, especially if the foods are fatty, will lead to heartburn since the enzymes that will break up the fatty acids may back up since it is being produced in excess.

It will affect your sleep: Overeating may disturb your body clock since your sleep and hunger hormones are usually in sync. So it will probably affect your sleep at night as well, or during irregular time and mess up your sleeping pattern.
