Para-Athletics federation president, Ogu impeached
The president of ParaAthletics Federation of Nigeria, Dr. Geoffrey Ogu was on Friday impeached after members of the board passed a vote of no confidence on him at an extra-ordinary congress held in Abuja.
The former Director of sports in the FCT was immediately replaced by a member of the board, Hon. Chikwendu Amobi who is also the chairman of Enugu State Para-Athletics Association. A member of the board, Prof. Alphonsus Ekwerike who presided over the meeting and addressed the press said it was an unanimous decision taken by the members following ‘administrative omissions’.
He said the impeachment of the former president was necessary for the federation to move forward. “Members of the board showed concerns over unresolved administrative omissions and decided that for us to move forward, we need a new president.
“Our target is to make our athletes to be among the best in the world so we settled for a man with the, passion, experience and connections to get the job done.
“The vice-president too was put on trial but after his explanations, we agreed that he should continue in his position,” said Ekwerike.
In his acceptance speech, the new president said because of the enormity of work on ground, he would hit the ground running.
He said his foundation, Bina Foundation has been doing so much for parasports in his state and the same gesture would be extended to para-athletics federation.
“We are ready to hit the ground running. This is a very familiar terrain. My foundation has been investing a lot in parasport.
“Our athletes are not exposed internationally and they are complaining. We need to do something urgently.
“The first thing I am going to do is to pay for their licence to enable them compete internationally. This will be done on Monday.
“We cannot wait for the ministry to do everything for us. My foundation and well-meaning public spirited individuals will help us in ensuring that these people who are seemingly neglected are given the boost to realise their potentials,” said Amobi. The impeached president, Dr. Ogu is said to have tendered his letter of resignation with ministry of sports but it rejected by the board members who insisted on his impeachment.
