Residents jubilate as troops repel Boko Haram in Monguno
Residents jubilated after the military yesterday repelled an attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to attack Monguno in Borno State yesterday.
Reliable sources said residents came out to show appreciation after troops successfully repelled the attack.
A security source confirmed the development, but said the attack was brought under control with the help of air bombardment.
The source noted that troops successfully repelled the insurgents and a mop-up operation began after that.
“Everything is under control, no cause for alarm, they made effort as usual but it was repelled. Right now, mop-up operation is ongoing to assess the casualty figure,” the security source said.
Daily Trust had earlier reported that persons suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents attacked two local government areas of Borno State. It was learnt that the insurgents stormed Monguno town exactly 11:30, shooting sporadically in an attempt to overrun the town.
In another development, one person was reported killed and others were injured after an incident between some people in military uniforms and officials of the COVID-19 committee in Borno State yesterday.
The men in military uniforms were reported to have disregarded the interstate travel ban, and forced their way through the entrance gate to Borno and allowed hundreds of illegal travelers into the town.
The men who arrived in three gun trucks, allegedly threatened to open fire on the COVID-19 Committee members.
While breaking through the barricade, they rammed through a patrol truck of the State Rapid Response Squad which forced the vehicle somersaulting in the bush. All local security personnel in the vehicle sustained injuries while the driver of the RRS truck died hours later at the Borno Specialist Hospital.
