Man Utd, Chelsea, Leicester battle for Champions League tickets as EPL ends today

- By Olusola ‘Jide @jide_olusola

With champions, Liverpool and Manchester having qualified for the Champions League, the battle for the remaining two slots will be among the trio of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Leicester City and this will be decided when the curtain falls on the English Premier League today.

Going into the last games of the season today, which will be played simultaneously, Chelsea will take on Wolves while Leicester City will welcome Manchester United.

The 6-time League champions, Chelsea would have been guaranteed Champions League spot only if they had won or drew the game against Liverpool which they lost 5-3. As they have lost the ‘grace’, they are ‘condemned’ to secure all three points against a physical Wolves side.

Chelsea, who have lost five games at home to a Wolves side have won 7 games away and lost 4 games at home will have their work cut out for them today at the Stamford Bridge.

Leicester 3-0 loss to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham on MatchDay 37 was Man Utd’s gain as the one point secured in the game against West Ham was fairly good enough to leapfrog Chelsea to take up the 3rd position.

With the permutations out, if Manchester United loses to Leicester City, it will see them drop to 5th position on the basis that Chelsea defeats Wolves.

If Leicester loses to Man Utd, they are almost certain to play in Europa except Wolves defeats Chelsea by 16 goals.

If Chelsea loses to Wolves and Man Utd loses as well, Leicester will overtake both clubs. This will mean Chelsea will play in Europa because Man Utd have a superior goal difference of +15.

All in all, Manchester United and Chelsea should be able to hold their grounds and secure the Champions League spots while Leicester City will experience Europa League football.
