200 houses submerged in Taraba flood

Over 200 houses and business premises were yesterday flooded in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital following a downpour which lasted for hours.

Our correspond­ent report that flood followed heavy rainfall which started at about 2am and lasted for about four hours.

Daily Trust on Sunday observed that the flood mostly affected houses and business premises located close to River Mayo Gwoi, Magami and Bypass.

The Mayo Gwoi Bridge was submerged, forcing several motorists to be stranded on the both sides of the bridge.

Further finding revealed that household items such as food stuffs and animals worth thousands of naira were lost in the flood which affected more than 200 houses all located by the Mayo Gwoi River.

A resident of one of locations affected by the flood ,Musa Dauda told Daily Trust that his house and those his neighbours were flooded, forcing them to evacuate to safety.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Jalingo LGA, Nasiru Bobboji has called for urgent provision of relief materials and medication for victims of the flood disaster in the state.

Meanwhile one lane of the MayoGwoi Bridge was closed to traffic because of a crack noticed on a potion of the bridge following the flood which submerged the bridge.
