ATM etiquette

-

The automated teller machine (ATM) is used by a large number of people. There are even periods of the month when it appears as if people are gathering around these machines for a convention. As a result, it’s only natural for us to treat each other with respect when conducting business at an ATM. Here are some ATM dos and don’ts to help make our interactions with other users hitch-free:

Maintain some distance: Allow an ATM user the privacy he or she requires, when there are no demarcation lines at the ATM location, this might be quite difficult. If you can’t get at least four feet away from whoever is using the ATM, just try not to make him or her feel uncomfortable. “I’m so sorry, there isn’t much place for me to go back much more,” is a simple means to dismiss any notion that you’re “spying” on him or her.

If there’s a line behind you, don’t take too long: Although there is no limit to the amount of consecutive transactions you can make at an ATM, if there is a long line behind you, it’s better to limit yourself to two (at most three) at a time. We’ve seen people insert up to 15 ATM cards, one after another. Despite the fact that there was a large line behind them.

Keep your eyes alert: When using ATMs that are not located within bank premises, be cautious. It pays to be cautious when it comes to your safety. If you realise anything or anyone suspicious in the vicinity of the ATM, immediately seek assistance from a bank personnel or call the bank’s hotline. This is a relatively regular notice from all of the world’s banks.

Toss your receipts in the garbage: How many times have you seen an ATM machine with receipts all over the floor, despite the fact that there is a trash can right next to it? If the trash can is already full, save your ATM receipt and throw it away when you find a nearby waste bin.

Prepare yourself: Have your card ready and all papers completed before approaching the ATM. This is very vital on hectic days. You don’t want to keep people waiting while you search through your luggage or pockets for your card.
