MSCN commends Buhari on new copyright law

The Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd./Gte (MCSN) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the new Copyright Act 2022, which he recently signed as a parting gift to the creative industry.

In a letter written by the society’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mayo Ayilaran, he thanked the outgoing President for finding it appropriat­e to provide the creative industry with a parting gift in the form of a new copyright law.

The society also congratula­ted the president for the significan­t influence his administra­tion had on the creative industry over the last seven years, during which difficult decisions were made. As a result of all of these changes, Nigeria’s creative industries are now emerging as a thriving economic sector.

“Nigerian music, movies, literally works and artworks among others, are now ranked among the best across the world and yielding multimilli­on dollars for our creators,” Mr Ayilaran said.

He further stated that, “Your administra­tion has enabled the emergence of a viable and sustainabl­e structures upon which our creators can rely to reap the benefits and dividends of their intellectu­al labor. Our organizati­on, the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd. (MCSN) is one of such structures.

licensed and approved as a collecting society or collective management organizati­on, which has within the last two years distribute­d various sums of money totaling over four hundred million naira (N400,000,000.00) to music creators in Nigeria and around the world, for which many of our creators are able to solve certain of their basic problems.”MCSN represents the copyright interests of most Nigerian musicians visà-vis those of our internatio­nal foreign affiliates in Nigeria.”
